I’m a pretty mild-mannered woman and I try to be inclusive about people who believe differently than I do. I strongly dislike confrontation and inviting argument, particularly with extremists in politics and religion. But I do listen to them—usually. But, sometimes even respected (in some quarters) evangelists and religious and racist extremists make me want to put on a pair of brass knuckles on these 72-year-old, slightly knotted fingers, and begin smashing the faces of very stupid people. For example:
“Evangelical broadcaster Pat Robertson says that Haiti has been "cursed" because of what he called a "pact with the devil" in its history. His spokesman said that the comments yesterday were based on Voodoo rituals carried out before a slave rebellion against French colonists in 1791. Robertson has angered opponents many times before with comments on current events and criticism of other faiths. He once said that American agents should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, and said that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution for withdrawing from the Gaza Strip. “ —Associated Press
“Well, it didn't take long for conservative firebrand Rush Limbaugh to use the crisis in Haiti to attack President Obama politically. On his radio show yesterday Limbaugh said the earthquake in Haiti will play right into Obama's hands by allowing him to play up his "compassionate" and "humanitarian" credentials, and that the President will use this crisis to "boost his credibility with the black community."
As if that weren't enough, Limbaugh also pivoted off a caller who complained about Obama directing the public to the White House website to find charitable organizations operating in Haiti to promote a conspiracy theory that finding these charities via the White House website puts your money at risk of not reaching Haitians.
Limbaugh also seems to feel we've done enough already for Haiti: ‘We've already donated to Haiti. It's called the U.S. income tax.’" – Huffington Post
And who was it that said the people of New Orleans were being punished by God when Katrina hit? Or that the Holocaust didn’t exist?
Forgive them, Lord, for they know not what they do—but in these cases they do know. I'm not a big literal Satan believer, I'll admit, but is it possible that these whacky guys are possessed themselves? Who in the hell can be a rational, compassionate Christian and spout this hateful shit?
